Understanding Ibuprofen: Mechanism and Indications

Mechanism of action:

  1. Ibuprofen inhibits the activity of COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, although it has a greater affinity for COX-1.
  2. COX-1 is expressed constitutively in many tissues and participates in the maintenance of normal physiological functions, such as the protection of the gastric mucosa, the regulation of platelet aggregation and support for renal function.
  3. The COX-2, meanwhile, is inducible and participates mainly in the inflammatory process.
  4. By inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2, ibuprofen reduces the production of prostaglandins, which leads to a decrease in inflammation, pain and fever.

“Through its inhibition of cox enzymes, ibuprofen provides effective relief for conditions such as arthritis, menstrual pain, dental pain, migraines and sports injuries.”

Indications:

  • Arthritis: ibuprofen is commonly used to control the symptoms of arthritis, including pain, stiffness and swelling.
  • Dysmenorrhea: women suffering from menstrual pains often find relief with ibuprofen.
  • Dental pain: Ibuprofen can help relieve pain and inflammation associated with dental procedures or teeth aches.
  • Migraine: Ibuprofen is often used as part of a treatment regime for migraines, helping to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Sports injuries: ibuprofen is frequently recommended for the treatment of minor injuries, such as sprains or twist, due to its analgesic and ant i-inflammatory properties.

Usual doses of ibuprofen:
Compressed Capsule Suspension
200 mg 400 mg 100 mg/5 ml
400 mg 600 mg
600 mg 800 mg
